Dr. Peter V Candela, LTC, BSC, SCANG
Dr. Candela received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry Memphis, Tennessee in 1985. He practiced in Memphis for eight years and was awarded in 1987, Tennessee’s Young Optometrist of the Year award. He moved to the Columbia, South Carolina area in 1993.
His training and background are in general optometry, eye disease management and treatment, ocular disease, and contact lenses. He sees children from infancy on up, treats eye infections, inflammations, foreign body removal, glaucoma and other conditions of the eye caused by systemic disease, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Dr. Candela is a member of the American Optometric Association and the South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association. Dr. Candela currently serves as Vice President of the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Optometry. He is an active member and past President of both the Midlands Optometric Society and the South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association.
In 2008 Dr. Candela was selected by the South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association as South Carolina Optometrist of the year.
He was one of the first 500 Optometrists nationally to pass a National Board Certification exam and to achieve diplomate status in the American Board of Optometry. It is the first certification and maintenance of certification program in the Optometric profession.
He currently serves as a reservist at the rank of Lt. Colonel in the South Carolina Air National Guard, McEntire Joint Air National Guard Base.
